Shalimar Parfum by Jacques Guerlain 1925

Hey Hey All,
I am wearing one of my Shalimar 1970-80s Parfums for the last time. It came in a lovely gold tone basket weave atomiser. The parfum version of the one pictured below. Unfortunately they don’t make the parfum inserts for this case anymore, or at least I can’t find them in Sydney, Australia. So instead of Boo Hoo-ing I’m sending my Shalimar far away to a new home where I know it will be treasured and used to the last dregs.

From Fragrantica
Shalimar was created by Jacques Guerlain in 1925, as a tribute to the legendary love story between Emperor SHAHJAHAN and his wife Mumtaz Mahal. Before he became emperor his name was Prince Khurram. According to the legend, twenty- year-old Prince Khurram met a young girl, named Arjumand Banu at the bazaar where her family worked. Mesmerized by her beauty, after becoming emperor, he made her his wife as Mumtaz Mahal, meaning the “Jewel of the Palace”. After the wedding ,the prince and Mumtaz were inseparable, in war and in peace. She had given 13 children to Shahjahan and died during the birth of their 14th child at the age of 39. Her death devastated Shah Jahan and had built Taj Mahal in memory of his wife and their undying love. Shalimar is named after ‘The Gardens of Shalimar’. It was Mumtaz’s favorite garden.

In times of major events, stress, fun, worry, happiness, even going down to the shop or cleaning through the years this case and parfum have been right there with me. There’s not even 2ml left now but the juice is still perfect.

How does it smell? Well the first waft if you spray on your chest is a big fat animalic, citrus and vanilla rush so filled with the animals that unless you are prepared it can knock you a bit silly, and the rush isn’t over in a minute like many modern perfumes, no way! You get a full 40 minutes of this deliciously deranged magic. All warm and cuddly vanilla, spicy citrus and just got home from work, then gym and about to have sex manimal. GRRRR! How was this ever an elegant womens fragrance? Such raw and sexy content. Now that I know the term, “Ho Panies” I can’t get the image out of my nostrils, this is sex bottled.

As we mosey along together the rich powdery iris and vetiver take centre stage, still with all the musk and civet squaring up with the incense, resins and woods. I think I miss the patchouli because it’s so unlike the ones used today and I must be mistaking it for something else. Hours and hours of this section as the beautifully blended magic works through its own accords in Shalimar’s own time, I have never noticed a pepper note but there is definitely one lurking around and through today. In the very mild winter we are having I get nearly a full afternoon from this section before it starts heading towards the sweet vanilla, suede and wood dry down that anyone who loves Shalimar will know so well.

Honey, next time you are looking for something like that, lmk! I belong to every stinkin’ (haw!)perfume page there is – folks can find stuff like that and send it to you! That being said, I’m sure you’re sending it to a lovely and deserving home.

Great review of the jus, btw. I love vintage Shalimar! Should wear it more often.

You are a treasure of the rarest sort. Thank you. Shalimar will be very loved and, by the sounds of things, make me smell very luuurrvved! 😉

That’s kinda sad. It’s like saying good-bye to a close friend. I hope you find something suitable to take its place. It’s sweet of you to find it a new home too. You’ve made someone very happy I’m sure.

This is why I do not like the “re-fill” thingys!!
I used to wear Shalimar from that 70′ to 80’s era and the parfum was divine back then – the one you can buy now does not have the same scent or staying power sadly.
I have a couple of the gold “cages” from the design After the one you are talking about and they are shocking ! The refill does not sit in it properly and the heavy lid falls off all the time – Rrrrrr !!
I just use the refil “as is” — this is why I do not like those “cages” – I would rather just buy the scent in the bottle to be thrown away when empty ! LOL
My daughter wears Shalimar wonderfully and I have moved on ….the re-form. Shalimar does not suit me anymore 😦

    • I hear your pain LadyJicky. It has been fun having it and the memory of that is pretty good. I’m always sad when I can’t get something I’ve loved. Unfortunately, that’s life, I’m going to splurge on a lovely decant atomiser for my Vintage Shalimar Parfum that is in the urn, I will be very happy,
Glad to hear your daughter is still carrying the Shalimar flame, you wait, there will be really excellent Shalimar again.

Thanks Portia , I have enjoyed all yur posts this week ! Guerlain are a wonderful company ! I simply love Chamade , it’s musky Rich and super floral! I sprayed myself and a card almost 3 weeks ago and the card still smells Devine ! I would suck it if I could but that would not be polite , I keep taking huge whiffs of it and I just sigh at the beauty ! Have a great weekend !

    • Hey Tim,
I would NEVER have picked you for a Chamade man. Have you tried their Habit Rouge? I bet Woody would smell gorgeous in it too.

I think I have !!! I think i thought I was nice , but not one that takes its place on the top of my wish list !! Will give it another sniff as I know it is esteemed ! And yes Chamade all the way !! It kind of has that school teacher authority vibe to it for me ! I want some really bad !

SOTD, youth dew bath oil with Serge Lutan Muscs Kabali Khan on top ! Sorry for the spelling as I’m in the car ! It smells like dirty petrol and spice !! And yes all windows are up ! Heading to the shire on a cloud on niche and Estée ! Ahhh the joys , love ya xxx

    • What an excellent combination. Youth Dew Bath Oil. The original and best. I have an unopened bottle of MKK here awaiting an opening ceremony.

Mkk is a doozy !! I’m not sure how I feel about it ? The cumin note in femme has helped me with this one and I think it smells like all the things people say it does and I had a strong reaction to it as it reminded me of a little girl I know from my past !! Smell is so powerful , I hope u can find a place for it as I have, please post on what your thoughts opinions are ! We might hear u mention hoe panties again !

  8. Amen to that….. and may the gorgeous scent live on forever xxxxxx

Farewell lovely Shalimar. Every time I hear the name Shalimar I can’t help but think of Brian Ahern as Mr. Shalimar in the 1959 20th Century Fox film “The Best of Everything.” It’s just the way my brain works.

  10. Undina says:

Not a Shalimar fan (yet?) but I’m moved by your beautiful gesture. You’re so nice ❤

  11. Lily says:

Hi Portia. I remembered you when I came across news of a new version of Shalimar Ode à la Vanille. The vanilla in this one’s supposed to have a “very suave and woody nuance” as if a suave and woody nuance is something Shalimar needed, but thought you might be interested since it’s available.

This is such a sweet story of a gorgeous perfume sent off in style. ❤

I bought my first bottle of Shalimar at 21 because to me, it smelt like cakemix, and the lady behind the counter tried to talk me out of it, warning me it was ‘a mature woman’s fragrance’. Despite my tender age I pushed through with my purchase and savoured my first bottle for over 5 years due to finances. 13 years on, I am still as in love with this fragrance and have never been able to wear anything else as I get headachy easily from perfumes. I can’t smell Shalimar on myself. Does anyone have any suggestions of an alternative fragrance just to give me an alternative scent?

    • WOW! A Shalimar aficianado indeed. For a cheap change within the same constructs try Jassica Simpson’s Fancy Nights, also less expensive is Queen Laifa’s Queen (the red bottle.
Otherwise, if it’s the Guerlain that you love why not go to SurrenderToChance and get the Guerlain sample set. That way you can try them all in the comfort of your own home.
Another good spicy vanilla scent but with a hefty dose of cocoa is Piment Brulant by L’Artisan Parfumeur.
SmellBent also does some great bakery scents.
      Good luck with your hunt,
      Portia x

Thanks Portia, I hit the department store yesterday and have actually found a close contender: Dior Miss Dior EDP (New Scent). The rep told me I must be “an old soul” – again, another age comment! Never thought I’d go for a fruity floral, but the vanilla element reminds me of my Shalimar body cream which on me smells more fruity than the EDP. My 5 year old commented “but you just don’t smell like Mummy” – he loves “Shali”. Have ordered my first bottle of New Miss Dior, but moving Shali aside on my dresser, I must admit I did feel slightly guilty. She’ll always be my Number One. xx
