Baiser Vole EdP by Mathilde Laurent for Cartier 2011 Perfume Review

Hiya Happy Huffers,

I have often liked or loved the Cartier fragrances. Declaration, Must De Cartier and a couple of the Hours Series have previously captured my attention. Recently I reviewed a lily fragrance and a commenter (maybe Undina or Dionne?) asked if I had tried the Cartier lily. In truth I had not so I went and ordered in my next sample haul from MyPerfumeSamples and it came in last week.

Baiser Vole EdP by Cartier 2011

Photo Stolen Fragrantica

Fragrantica gives these featured accords:
Top: Pistils of the lily, citrus
Heart: Lily petals
Base: Green leaves of lily (musk not noted)

Fresh, green, bright, airy floral opening with a citric tang Baiser Vole EdP opens surprisingly powerfully but feminine, there is a waxy cellophane wrapping that is so like a lily that it’s uncanny. Not the huge funereal Casablance lily but maybe the Christmas Trumpet or a smaller Asiatic lily. Even though this is clearly aimed at a feminine market a man could wear Baiser Vole a enjoy the freshness and sparkle, a mans chemistry takes some of the milkiness away and adds something that I can’t put my finger on.

Though light, I am getting good sillage and scent bubble in the first couple of hours. Not a clean scent as such but it does evoke the cleanliness of fresh air and as Mathilde Laurent says in the video below, like smelling a huge vase of lilies; from buying, cutting stems, scorching, arranging and enjoying. It’s all here and lovely without being intrusive, after the initial hour or two wearable in all situations. If you were to spritz at home in the morning by the time you were at work, even in the most fragrance phobic of offices and close quarters, you would be at acceptable levels of fragrant. It’s like having a very good, rich and expensive lotion on that maintains its scent for about 4-5 hours before it becomes a whisper quiet, musky green shadow on top of your own bodies natural fragrance that stays way longer than you’d expect, up to 12 hours if you have originally spritzed with abandon.

This 5ml decant has almost disappeared in the last few days as I’ve written this review so I bought a bottle. What a super great summer, spring and autumn scent and on those cold days in winter it will bring back the soft, warm evenings of other months. Though its advertising has it as a languid evening love story I think Baiser Vole is much less dressed up than that, perfect with weekend casuals, work suit or gown.

Do you have a favourite lily fragrance. I really love them but am only new to the genre, please leave me some that you like in the comments, and why you like them.

Till tomorrow we wish only your good dreams come true.
Loads of love,

    Ah, consider the lily…as Easter/Madonna lilies, my other most favorite flower of all! I’ve been more than a bit intrigued with lily perfumes and know quite a few…My all-time two Lily Loves are Frederic Malle’s Lys Mediterranee (simply sumptuous, beachy/salty, breezy lily) and Dawn Spencer Hurwitz’ recreation of an ancient Egyptian lily perfume called Sousinon – 1000 Lilies – it was used to perfume Cleopatra’s sails as her barge went down the Nile. Can you imagine? 😉 Dawn’s take is richer than Malles, with more of an authentic, true-to-the-flower feel. I wanted to love the now discontinued Donna Karan Gold – decadent Casablanca lily, but something about it became almost too much after a while. Then of course, there is the outrageous Un Lys by Serge Lutens – being a Lutens, not your usual lily, but rather a Baroque stargazer bouquet. Swoon-worthy stuff, literally. Spray wisely! 😉 Another near-perfect lily in that Magritte “This is Not An Orchid” way, is Aftelier’s solid perfume Orchid. I’ve been known to layer it with other lilies to maximise the mileage! 🙂 Never tried this Cartier. Something tells me that might be a good idea! ;

Ooh–I have a sample of Basier Vole as an extra from a swap–time to try it out! Tarleisio, Lys Mediterranee is one of my absolute favorites, probably in my top 3 perfumes of all time. The salty gingery tone is so addictive.

    • Yeah Anatu13,
Come tell me how you liked it. Great to wear for quiet adventures and bed. You can really enjoy it more when you have time and space to concentrate on it.
Come tell me if you liked it after please,
      Portia xx

        I will! Thanks!

So, I’m finding that this starts out lovely–fresh and grassy with a touch of lily, low sillage–and after about a half an hour to an hour it’s a little odd (hard to describe), and then not much at all after that. I’ll try again another day, but this seems to me like some of the Annick Goutals that sound amazing and work for everyone else but fizzle out on me. Sigh! Well, thankfully I have FM Lys Mediterranee and SL Un Lys decants (and Tauer Lys du Desert on the way!), so I can have my lily fix regardless 🙂 I need to try Lys Soleia–I did not realize it is salty, which I love!

      • Christy, I’m so sad this didn’t do amazing stuff on you, iit goes small but still skin scent and lasts for hours on my scent hungry skin.
Lys soleia is so yummy. It may live longer for you hopefully. TradeServices has it VERY cheap.

I wonder if I’m anosmic to whatever is in the ones that do this on me. At least it is another sample I can pass along to someone who will enjoy it! 🙂 I will definitely try Lys Soleia–thank you for mentioning it!

The only Lilly I like is Miss Lilly from “The Munsters”. …. just kidding. It sounds really interesting. I loved hearing Mathilde Laurent’s perspective on the scent. That was extra special.

Thankyou Portia and Thankyou Shiela ! Great review and suggestions on Lilly fragrances ! I must investergate ! I’m heading SL and FM first as I can smell them at my local mecca cosmetica ! I hope I don’t fall in love ,

I love Baiser Vole too, and Sheila mentioned two other two faves featuring the note – DKNY Gold and SL Un Lys, which I own. I have Lys Soleia too and would love more of Hermes Vanille Galante – a salty, vanillic offbeat lily frag. Lys Carmin by Van Cleef is also a current lily lemming. Though I would probably be happy to lose my Lily & Spice by Penhaligon’s.

    • I love DKNY Gold too and have EdT & EdP, the EdT is stronger on my skin and lasts better but the EdP BOTTLE!!!
I have VG by Hermes but have rarely worn it because its not really a vanilla and that threw me, I will re look.

    Hello lovely,

Oooh!! Being the big white floral gal I am I am drooling! I adore lily and my faves are FM Lys Med, SL Un Lys and CdG green series Lily. But I NEED this! Can’t wait to sniff!

  7. SonomaVelvet says:

Oh Portia, I can’t wait to hear about you smelling Un Lys. I think it is the biggest, most womanly, creamy smooth gorgeous, pillowy luscious lily out there. I’ve had decants of most of the others mentioned, being a bit of a lilyholic, but Un Lys is my total show stopping favourite. I do like the others, and wear Lys Solea quite a bit currently, but mostly in a strange attempt to keep Un Lys ‘special’. You almost have to be careful with Un Lys, a bit like a diva, she might just entice you in and end up swallowing you whole, she’s that kinda lady. Yet she is so cool and elegant, and you like vanilla? On me, after about 3 hours the big luscious lilyness turns over to a creamy cool vanilla. It’s so interesting, so different from most vanilla’s that I read as warm. This vanilla reads cool to me somehow but so elegantly comforting.
I liked Lys med as well but not ‘lily’ enough for me, lovely but for me a little too coy, like there are lilys over there a bit, I can smell them, but can’t bury my face in them the way I want to. CdG Lily is nice and on the greener side, I think in a similar way to Baiser Vole, fresher, green lilies. I need to get my hands on some DSH’s 1000 lilies. Sounds so intriguing.
But Un Lys, to me is like curling up right inside the lily, and floating away….

  8. Dionne says:

It was likely Undina that recommended Baiser Volé to you as 1) I haven’t tried it yet and 2) the lilies I’ve tried didn’t like me. Won a generous sample from Ayala Moriel of Lys Mediterranée… nope. Really, really hoped DK Gold would work, I mean that’s a beautiful bottle at a great price….. nope. Tried AA Lys Soleia because of your review…. nope. Ineke’s Gilded Lily…. not as bad as the others, but ultimately nope.

However, you should smell these on my RL evil-scent twin. Gaw-jus! Because of her, I’ll probably still keep trying (I’m nothing if not stubborn). Possibilities include Yosh’s Stargazer, DSH’s 1000 Lilies, JM’s Dark Amber and Ginger Lily, Penhaligon’s Lily and Spice, and some Ava Luxes.

    • Thanks Dionne. i tell you what, there is a surfeit of great lily out there that I never knew about. Another fragrant worm hole to be lost in thanks to Lys Soleia. he He He,
      Portia xx

      • Undina says:

I think it was I who suggested Baiser Volé (even though when I tested it first I almost hated it :)). I don’t think it’s this perfume’s problem though: I just probably do not like strong lily note in a perfume. I do not mind it whem it’s a “one of” but I didn’t find any of the perfumes with a dominant lily note appealing. Though I love Jo Malone’s Dark Amber & Ginger Lily – you should definitely try this one!

      • Aha! I don’t have much luck with Jo Malone Undina. My skin drinks the scent in about 25 minutes.
On jin’s skin they are awesome and last for hours.
        VERY annoying.

  9. poodle says:

I have this and I like it even though it doesn’t last more than 2 hours on me. It smells a lot like the pink bubble bath from Avon that my mom used to have. It’s not an exact match but it’s very close in my mind. I love lilies but can’t say I’ve explored many perfumes that are mostly lily. I’m going to have to try some of the ones people suggested.

    • Yeah, I’m with you Poodle. Exploration coming up.
It stays with me forever unless I’ve been to work, then it doesn’t last the way I want a frag to last but excellent bed wear, I wake up with just a hint of green lily leaf or root.
      Portia xx

  10. Patty White says:

I really like this one, even though it got dissed a lot. It is big and over the top, and I can only do like one spray, but it is the scent that practically every guy I’m around when I put it on does that “you smellll gooooood” thing. Apparently it is men’s favorite note.

  11. Natalie says:

I need to revisit this. I thought the opening was a really pretty lily when I tried it, but then it just kind of nosedived. I hear the new concentrations are possibly better, though. I’ll have to go back and figure out what I tried, then give the others a go when I’m next out sniffing.
