02 L`Air du Desert Marocain by Andy Tauer for Tauer Perfumes 2005

Hello Happy Huffers,

Andy Tauer is a name most perfumistas know, many love his work and can’t get enough, some find it horrific and can’t understand why the rest of us are so smitten. Tauer-ade is the killer, long lasting fragrant base that Tauer Perfumers are famous for but on some skins it turns into a screaming nightmare with the half life of uranium. Luckily, i am one of the former, not merely smitten with the fragrances but also with Andy Tauer himself who looks remarkably like Homer Simpson’s sexy Christian neighbour Ned Flanders.

See what I mean? Really, it’s uncanny isn’t it? I can’t take all the credit for this discovery but I am thrilled that you are now in on the secret.

Fragrantica gives these featured accords:
Top: Coriander, cumin, petitgrain
Heart: Rock rose, jasmine
Base: Cedar, vetiver, ambergris

I love this spicy opening, like a blast of herbal resin, sweet, sharp and delicious. The opening feels more wet than you’d expect in a fragrance named for the Moroccan Desert, as if you’ve landed at an oasis after the arid desert dryness. The ambient wetness seems to dry within a few minutes and while keeping a spicy feel the focus turns floral, but not a bouquet. If ambergris it is then I feel its salty tang, but that could be the vetiver, and it flows in before the first half hour is over tamping down the florals and keeping them as background noise. I don’t read vanilla in the notes, or amber, but maybe the rock rose has hints of labdanum because I’m getting a lovely warmth and sweetness. I don’t know really but these are the things I am picking up, the cedar is a lovely freshly hewn scent.

Though L`Air du Desert Marocain is named for the desert I feel the only thing desert-ish about it is the lovely sense of space between the notes, an airiness. I was expecting armpits, camels, dust and dog mixed with zinging spices and the sizzle of oil over a wood fire. What I get is a beautifully constructed fragrance that hints at the cloudless sky, a long expanse of desolate space, the warmth and waxiness of desert plants and the seraglio, filled with clean and bodily hairless women softly sweating in the heat and awaiting their masters pleasure.

My second favourite from Andy Tauer, right after Reverie au Jardin

This is the only Tauer I have been able to enjoy – no, that’s not true. I also enjoy Vetiver Dance but I think that’s because the vetiver beats the living daylights out of the Tauerade and reduces it to manageable proportions. I ‘get’ Tauers…I just can’t wear most of them

And omg! yes! Hottie Ned Flanders. You just know he’s a Bomb in a Bible!

I’m a fan of Andy’s scents. I really like this one and also enjoy Lonestar Memories. Both have that wild, outdoorsy sort of feeling to me. The other I’ve tried and while I didn’t even like it at first I ended up loving it is Incense Rose. At first it was horrible and I scrubbed. But something made me try again (glutton for punishment maybe?) and the second time it blossomed into this wonderful scent. I’m actually considering a bottle.

    Hello lovely,

    Lovely review!

From my experience of a few I am sadly the latter which surprises me with my scent eating skin. This is especially the case with Le Maroc Pour Elle, the opening is lovely but the rest of it makes me feel ill.

I remember trying laddm in London at a scent event and liking it though recently ordered a sample and battling between love and hate.

Your post saw me try it again last night and surprisingly, it felt quite similar to Mitsy.

He might just have a fan in me yet!

  5. L’Air du désert marocain and Lonestar Memories are my absolute two favorites from Andy Tauer.

Now I just need a man to wear them 😉

Great review, Portia! And he does look like Ned, but only in the most excellent and complimentary way!

He does look like Ned Flanders!!! LOL
I have only tried and bought one Tauer – Une Rose Vermeille . When I first sprayed Une Rose Vermeille on I got a huge hit of …… Plastic ! OMG – what have I done !
But ….. let it settle and it goes a deep fruity rose . Plus my husband liked it! Huh?
Never says that about my Mitsouko! Rrrrr
I can live with it but …. will not buy it again .
I would only buy a sample of any of his other scents now 😦 Bit scared with the opening of the one I do have but it does have super sillage which is a big bonus to me as I do not keep scents that well.
Don’t like the metal box it came in either – hard to open and somewhat ugly to me and ends up in recycle – silly.
This is just my opinion .

    • WOW LadyJicky,
I keep samples in the metal box, it’s a perfect hideaway size.
You had me at Rose, I think he did it so well. I also get plastic from some other rose scents but when you score a rose petal with your nail it smells like that sometimes too, don’t you think?

You have a point about the plastic smell of a petal Portia! It does go away 🙂

Thankyou , thankyou —- I now know what to do with his metal box — I will put my samples in it like you do !
    Clever Portia !!!!! 🙂

I have heard of Tauer Perfumes but have yet to test any. And to borrow from Jane Withers, “Boy Howdy you got me sold!” Sounds so up my Moroccan alley. All that wide open space and sweaty harem girls. I can’t wait to get on this camel and ride like Laurence of Arabia!

  9. Undina says:

I enormously respect Andy and follow his brand with an interest but more of his perfumes do not work for me than do.

I absolutely love Une Rose Vermeire and get compliments every time I wear it. I grew to like Zeta (as soon as I stopped expecting it to smell of linden). I liked L’Air du désert marocain and Lonestar Memories when I tested them but I need to test them more. Everything else really doesn’t work.

  10. Tara says:

I love Andy and his perfumes! Favorites are L’Air du Desert Marocain, Une Rose Vermeille, Orange Star and Incense Extreme. Lonestar Memories was a bit of a shocker, similar to how you described Jackaroo I would think. 🙂

  11. Tara says:

Eau d’Epices is quite nice, no complaints on that one, it just didn’t make my top 5. I have not had a chance to smell Auburn yet but will give it a go next opportunity I get! If Jackeroo is stronger than Lonestar Memories, I don’t think I could manage it. :-0

  12. Dionne says:

Not all of the Tauers do it for me, but when they do, it’s a grand thing. I love Maroc pour Elle, Incense Rosé, Incense Extreme and Rose Chyprée, and although LDDM smells good on me, it’s FANTASTIC on Archimedes and was his first fragrant purchase. The boy’s got some serious style. Last year I had an old girlfriend visiting when he was going out to a school dance wafting it, and she turned to me and said, “You let him go out in public smelling that good? Is that safe?”
