Hothouse Flower by Ineke Ruhland for INeKE 2012

Hello Fellow Fumies.

I have a great online fragrance buddy, Undina from Undina’sLookingGlass, she is smart, cool and always a step ahead. Sometimes I am lucky enough to get a small Undina curated frag pack in the mail of things she thinks I will like, or that I must sniff. This one got slightly lost in transit but when the shiny blue package arrived I was over the moon. Swapping is a great way to find out more scents with only the charge of some decanting supplies and postage. Thank You Undina again

Fragrantica gives these featured accords:
Top: Green tea, green leaves and cypress
Heart: Gardenia, galbanum, fig and olibanum
Base: Guaiac wood, musk and corn silk

My first thought upon spritzing is gardenia, I so love that fresh fragrance and when it feels green, broken branch, sap and crushed leaves overlaid with gardenia I am in fragrance heaven. There is a luscious creaminess in Hothouse Flower that hovers above the green making our cool, sunny Autumn day here in Sydney feel like Spring. I feel as if I should walk outside to see the daffodils and spring runner iris in bloom instead of the Camellias flowering and the Liquidamber just starting to turn red at the top. A fresh gardenia with only the very slightest nod to its skanky, animalic deep notes, Hothouse Flower is a fresh burst of crisp that warm slowly over time but not a lot. It sweetens and the resins add a hint of amber or caramel, maybe it’s the fig adding a sweet milky note? We have a long waist high gardenia hedge four doors down the street and when it’s in flower we get a beautiful soft and elegant waft of an evening that drowns all other natural smells in the street, this smells like that hedge from our front yard. It is both fabulous and alluring, no wonder Billie Holiday chose it as her signature flower. In case you haven’t got the message, I freaking LOVE Hothouse Flower and will make it my first purchase from Scentsation in LA, May 11.

Though I can smell Hothouse Flower and feel extremely fragrant it doesn’t have a huge projection, nor does it take over a room quickly but half an hour later I come back to the room and I can smell a tiny pretty faded gardenia memory. About 4 hours of fragrant before I am left with only a whisper.

Raw Umber on Fragrantica said it excellently: Hothouse Flower smells like Spring erupting on all sides. It’s Spring on steroids. It is extremely uplifting and soothing….. It’s like natural anti-depressants. If you like gardenia, but dislike those heavy, sneeze-inducing, overpowering florals, this variation on a true to life green gardenia should help you begin your day on the right foot.

This is my favorite perfume from Ineke. I love real gardenias and sniff them compulsively, in friend’s gardens, stranger’s gardens, nurseries, anywhere I can get a hit! This is not a “real” gardenia in the sense of smell-alike, but it gives the full spirit of gardenia, and makes me smile.

Not all of INeke’s stuff works on me, Hothouse Flower included, but I love the ones that do. After My Own Heart was my very first niche purchase and still my favorite lilac, and Evening Edged in Gold and Field Notes from Paris smell divine when layered with each other.

I’ve always been impressed with this line: the bottles are affordable and look great, the sampler set is attractive and excellent for gift-giving plus you get the discount off a full bottle, the jus is clear so you can spray on clothes without staining, her customer service is fantastic, all these little touches that I really appreciate.

Isn’t Undina the best? she has turned me on to so many contemporary perfumes and gotten me out of my vintage rut!

P- I love that you are reviewing one of Ineke’s….aside from Sonoma Scent Studio (my all time favorite artisanal line) I also love what this artisanal house puts out….my first bottle was Field Notes (which was swiftly confiscated by Britt who drained it in three months). For Christmas this year the girls got another bottle of Field and Evening Edged in Gold ( I selfishly bought that one knowing that Court would share with me as it is my fav). And Colin likes Derring Do so one of these days a FB for him…..not one in the bunch that I don’t like including Hot House Flower…and Ineke’s hubby does customer service and he is a doll! I wholeheartedly support this line and hope that others give them a try. The sampler is absolutely stunning as well!!!!

OK enough of my ranting…..enjoy the day…great review!

The only one I have is Field Notes from Paris, and would love to smell the rest of the collection, especially the lilac one. I will be in LA for Scentsation, will any of the stores we go to be offering this line?

I love this scent. It’s a great interpretation of gardenia because it’s the green parts too, not just the flower. I hope you get that bottle. I have Field Notes from Paris. That was love at first sniff for me.

    • Hey Poodle,
I really liked FNFP, was in awe of its seamless and beautiful composition and story and understood that it is exactly the kind of fragrance that we perfumistas cry out for but it didn’t move me as I had hoped. Maybe my expectations were too high? Hothouse Flower ticks all the boxes and I can imagine myself reaching for it often.

My two loves (and two FB) from Ineke are Field Notes from Paris (I share it with my vSO and it smells even better on him than on me) and Hothouse Flower. And I have 3 travel bottles from their Floral curiocsities collection (in the cute Books packaging). But I like everything about the brand – their perfumes, their bottles and samples, their aesthetics (website, packaging, stands at shows) – so I plan to re-try all other perfumes from the sample set to see if I need more.

Portia, thank you again for your kind words.

  8. Victoria says:

It’s a really pretty fragrance. I love the addition of the fig in this. We rarely ever sniff fig in big ‘ole florals. And because of that, I think this gardenia gets an A+.

  9. Dubaiscents says:

A gardenia scent is high on my list to find and this is one I have been meaning to try. I have a decant of SL Une Voix Noire on the way and this is available here in Dubai so, I’m looking forward to seeing if one of these will be “the one”. Your review is making me anxious to try this and I am really sad I will miss the tour in LA it sounds like so much fun!
