Hi APJ,

I really like this perfume. I wore it a lot last summer when it seemed like the perfect summer fragrance. But now in winter, wearing it for this review I’ve found that I enjoy wearing it all year round.

Justin Bieber won big this year taking out US Fifi Awards in 2 categories. Justin Bieber’s Girlfriend, the second fragrance from the Biebster, won both ‘Fragrance of the Year – Women’s Popular’ and ‘Consumer Choice – Women’s’ categories.

The packaging for this perfume is fun and playful. The cross section of the purple bottle is heart shaped and it slots into a colourful canister that reminds me of a slinky. Fun! Taking the bottle out to spray makes me feel just a little happier.

The perfume starts fresh and fruity with citrus and crisp pear. Girlfriend is sweet but not overly. As the perfume evolves the floral notes come out and the fruit changes to what smells like honeydew melon to me, although it should be apricot based on the fragrance notes listed. The base notes of the fragrance are quite soft and the fresh sweetness stays until the end.

Excitement is building with pop singer Katy Perry about to launch her third perfume, Killer Queen created by Laurent Le Guernec who was also responsible for Lovely by SJP, twelve of the Bond No 9 releases and Viva by Fergie for Avon. In anticipation of the latest Katy Perry perfume I thought I would review her first two fragrances…..

Purr and Meow! (with an exclamation mark) are fun and playful just like Katy Perry and the cat figurine bottles in purple and pink are ‘to die for’.

Purr in the purple bottle was the first Katy Perry perfume and is a fruity floral perfume that starts out sweet with apple and peach. The fruit smells fresh, juicy and bright. There are pretty floral notes and a creamy vanilla that sits nicely in the background. The gardenia and jasmine are distinct but not too strong for Katy Perry’s teen fans. I really love the Purr bottle and the perfume is a good choice for everyday use but the perfume is not as impressive as the gorgeous bottle. It doesn’t push boundaries or include any surprises. The perfume is good but very safe. I’m not as crazy about the perfume as I am about the purple cat.

Meow! is cloudy lilac/pink with an M dangling from its collar and is very girly and smells delicious from beginning to end. Meow! is super sweet and fruity at the start. The fruit notes are candy-like and smell more like cherry and banana to me, rather than the tangerine and pear listed in the fragrance notes. When the fruity sugar hit passes the vanilla and musk take over and the perfume smells a lot like a soft gooey marshmallow, which ever so slowly dissolves and disappears.

Meow! with its pale pink bottle smells softer than the deep purple Purr. The floral notes in Purr smell quite intense compared with Meow!

Although the perfumes smell good, the most impressive thing about Katy Perry’s Purr and Meow! is probably the bottles, so lets hope that Killer Queen lives up to its name and delivers something kick-arse.

My last APJ review was for Jessica Simpson Fancy Nights. In the discussion that followed Azar made the comment “I recently went on a Steve Demercado jag. My favorites are his darker, smokier, boozy scents including Fancy Nights and Queen.” I still don’t have Queen but I have discovered two more Steve DeMercado fragrances in my collection – Paris Hilton Tease and Nicole by Nicole Richie. Today I will be reviewing……

Paris Hilton has released 16 perfumes since the original Paris Hilton fragrances for women and men debuted in 2005. They are a mixed bag. You never know what you’ll get when trying a new Paris Hilton perfume. Many are the typical sweet and fruity girly celebuscents but there are also a few mature perfumes in the Paris Hilton line and Tease falls into this category. In case you missed it Portia has previously confessed her love for a couple of Paris Hilton perfumes. Check out her reviews of Fairy Dust and Siren.

Paris Hilton’s Tease is a beautiful white floral scent that is strong and long lasting. Fragrantica describes it as a chypre-floral-oriental. It has a fresh fruity opening with apple and bergamot but it is not overly sweet. The fruit notes give lightness to the perfume against the heavy white florals, which are there from the start and dominated by tuberose. The tuberose is medium strength – not too strong for me to enjoy. Tease has a light woody base and lasts all day.

Fancy Nights by Steve Demercado for Jessica Simpson 2010

Hi everyone, Funny story. Hubby and I were in a taxi heading out to see a band the other night. I asked him what he thought of my perfume and he said, “I thought it was the cab.” I was wearing today’s fragrance that I’ll be reviewing. I couldn’t stop laughing; it made my night.

Top: Bergamot and Egyptian papyrus
Middle: Indonesian patchouli, Bulgarian red rose and night blossoming jasmine
Base: Sandalwood, oak moss, amber, vanilla

Does Fancy Nights really smell like a cab? Well it certainly doesn’t smell like air freshener or shampoo, its not clean and fresh or sweet like many celebuscents. Fancy Nights is smoky, spicy and has a kind of musty smell you get from patchouli. Maybe hubby has a point. I have been in cabs that have smelled smoky, spicy and musty but to describe a perfume as smelling like a cab just sounds so unflattering. I love Fancy Nights; it smells wonderful!

Jessica Simpson’s Fancy Nights is a strong, sophisticated perfume and the initial blast reminds me of Shalimar. It smells opulent and expensive. I notice an intense almost astringent type of smell at first like aniseed. The vanilla is very strong but not sweet. This is straight up vanilla – there is no cupcake or ice-cream influence at all. The vanilla is strong but the patchouli is just full on in Fancy Nights. It smells smoky and spicy with an earthy amber base. I really enjoy wearing this perfume, it smells absolutely gorgeous and when the patchouli eventually fades away, a sweeter vanilla and musk lingers.

Fancy Nights smells expensive but it is sooo cheap. You can get a 50ml bottle for $12.95 from Fragrance X.

Fancy Nights is the third fragrance in a range of Fancy perfumes from Jessica Simpson but the bright emerald green colour of the Fancy Nights bottle makes it stand out from the rest.

2007 was the year we saw Britney Spears suffer a very public breakdown. She spent time in rehab, shaved her head and lost custody of her children. 2007 is also the year that the Britney Spears fragrance Believe was released. Believe, one of the best perfumes from Britney Spears was released at a time when her life was in turmoil. Its times like this when you need to believe in the future. Britney managed to get through the tough times and get back in the spotlight for the right reasons appearing as a judge on America’s X-Factor in 2012.

Fragrance notes from Fragrantica
Top: guava and tangerine.
Heart: honeysuckle and linden blossom.
Base: patchouli, amber and sweet praline notes.

The green Believe bottle is quite spectacular, shaped like a multi-faceted triangular prism.

Believe starts out fresh and juicy with a delicious opening of tangerine and guava. This perfume deserves more than a quick sniff because if you rely on first impressions you will miss the best of this fragrance as it develops into a warm and spicy scent. There are beautiful soft florals and the perfume opens up with earthy notes from the patchouli and amber. Believe feels comforting with an easygoing patchouli that is cozy and warm. The praline carries on a delicious quality to the fragrance.

(Ed: Believe uses a softened version of the Mugler Angel base and is surprisingly wearable)

I haven’t been able to track down the name of the perfumer of Believe. Basenotes have the perfume listed as unknown. If I developed this fragrance I would proudly put my name on it.

I happily admit I was not in a hurry to try the Kim Kardashian perfume.  Yes, I have fragrances from Justin Bieber and Paris Hilton in my favourites list but everyone has their limits!  However I kept noticing favourable comments in the blogosphere that led me to take the plunge.  Who would have thought that Kim Kardashian could smell mature, long-lasting and sophisticated?

My first impression of the Kim Kardashian perfume – such a feminine fragrance!  Kim Kardashian is a rich floral perfume with jasmine, tuberose and gardenia.  When I first spray it on I find the scent quite sweet but the sweetness is from flowers.  There is no juicy fruit or other sugary ingredients.  This is a sophisticated, mature smelling fragrance rather than a girly celebuscent aimed at KK’s adoring teen fans.  The white florals are dominated by tuberose.  Tuberose can be a challenge for budding perfumistas but there is a creaminess to Kim Kardashian which makes it easier to wear and a great beginner tuberose fragrance.  Kim Kardashian melts down to a long lasting sultry scent.

I would tend wear this perfume when dressed for a night out rather than using it as an everyday scent but of course there are no rules – feel free to wear it whenever you like!

If you are a fan of white florals then give this one a chance – you may be pleasantly surprised.  When you can pick up a bottle for a bargain what have you got to loose?

Covet Sarah Jessica Parker 2007

What is with the weather in Australia this summer?  While Portia has been exploring a winter wonderland in Europe we’ve experienced heat-waves, flooding, crazy storms and bush fires.  I hope the APJ family has made it through the extreme weather without any major dramas.  The weather in Brisbane this week has been more rain and my backyard is becoming overgrown. Between showers last weekend I got out in the backyard, trudged through the long grass to cut back the overgrown geraniums and prune the lavender.  The damp green smell with lavender and geranium leaves reminded me of Covet by Sarah Jessica Parker.

When I dare to wear Covet it’s a bit like entering the wilderness of my backyard to prune my geraniums and lavender.   The opening of Covet is energising with some really interesting green notes.  There is loads of lavender that combines nicely with the lemon and chocolate.  The chocolate is not at all sweet and wafts in and out. There are some really lovely floral notes in Covet too. The warm base notes of musk and woods are earthy and long lasting.

Covet is louder, bolder and more sophisticated than Lovely, the original Sarah Jessica Parker fragrance.  However once the initial intense opening of Covet dies down there are a lot of similarities to Lovely with the lavender, lovely floral notes and woody, musk base.

Elixir is a gorgeous oriental fragrance by Colombian born singer Shakira.  Some of her biggest hits include ‘Whenever, Wherever’ and ‘Hips Don’t Lie’.  Shakira works with Spanish perfume house Puig along with Antonio Banderas who has a swag of celebrity scents.  I’ve been really impressed by the few I’ve tried by these Latino celebs and eager to try more, particularly the original S by Shakira, another oriental perfume.

I love wearing Shakira Elixir and hubby loves smelling it on me.  He seems to find it very alluring!  Right from the start I get a lot of wood, which I love.  It is warm and spicy, tending towards masculine.  In the background are some lovely floral notes and a hint of sweetness that provides balance to the perfume.  I was surprised to see peach listed in the fragrance notes.  Now I know its there I can pick it out but I didn’t notice any peach until I started looking for it.   The peach, brown sugar and powdery musk are more noticeable in the heatwave that has hit.

I love the commercial and packaging for Elixir.   The design on the box is so pretty and the bottle is shaped like a flask used to create a mysterious intoxicating elixir.  The Elixir commercial is set in a desert landscape with Shakira wearing a beautiful flowing skirt.

Shakira Elixir is anything but the sweet fruity floral you often find with celebrity perfumes.  This warm oriental perfume is gorgeous and my only criticism is the lasting power, which isn’t great. .   When I first spray on Elixir is seems quite heavy but it doesn’t last and I need to re-spritz through the day.

Christmas with the Stars

Katrina from Celebrity Perfume Store (<<JUMP) and I absolutely love Christmas; it’s my favourite time of year. I love the food, the lights and decorations, gift giving and especially celebrating with family and friends.

Tonight after enjoying a traditional turkey Christmas dinner with friends I will stay up late to wrap the gifts I have bought for my kids. I will put them under the tree and eat the cookie left out for Santa. It’s so exciting – I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep.

I plan to start Christmas day with a spritz of Justin Bieber’s Girlfriend. It’s such a fun perfume making it a great choice for Christmas day. Opening the slinky like canister to spray the bottle inside is like opening a Christmas present any day of the year. The fresh citrus and berry opening of Girlfriend will go perfectly with my bubbly and OJ as I watch my kids burst with excitement opening their presents. Christmas Day is going to be a scorcher here. In this hot humid weather my perfume doesn’t seem to last long whatever I wear. I’ll take the opportunity to switch fragrances later in the day. Unless I find that much wanted bottle of Kate Walsh Boyfriend under the tree I will probably wear Lady Gaga Fame for our family Christmas celebrations. I find Lady Gaga’s perfume more intense in this hot weather and get a lot more incense from Fame than when I first wore it in the cooler months. Maybe its time you revisited Lady Gaga Fame if you haven’t tried it with the change of season.

10 celebrity scents from 2012 to help with your Christmas shopping.  I’ve started with sweet “fruitchouli“ scents for any younger readers. The fragrances become less juvenile as the list goes on and you will find perfumes to suit more mature tastes.

1. Selena Gomez by Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez is the first perfume by Selena Gomez who has appeared in a number of children’s movies and is Justin Bieber’s ex-girlfriend.  Selena Gomez is the sweetest, fruitiest option with barely a hint of a floral note.

Top: raspberry, orange, pineapple, peach

Heart: Freesia, Cosmone musk, dewberry

Base: vanilla, amber, chocolate, coconut

2. Justin Bieber’s Girlfriend

In case you have been living under a rock the last few years, Justin Bieber is the pop singing tween idol from Canada.  Justin Bieber’s Girlfriend is his second offering.  Girlfriend is similar to the first Justin Bieber perfume called Someday but the fruity opening is lighter and fresher than Someday and the creamy floral notes in the original have been played down. The young celebrity couple only recently split so you might need to check who’s on Team Bieber or Team Gomez.

Heart: Freesia, star jasmine, apricot, orange blossom

Base: vanilla orchid, musk, white amber

3. Wonderstruck Enchanted by Taylor Swift

Wonderstruck Enchanted is the second fragrance from country singer Taylor Swift.  It is sweet, fruity and girly and comes in a gorgeous red bottle with charms around the neck.

Top: wild berries, pink poppy, passionfruit

Heart: peony blossoms, sugar-glazed champaca petals, freesia

Base: white musk, vanilla, blonde woods

4. Pink Friday by Nicki Minaj

For Nicki Minaj fans.  Honestly who else would want that perfume bottle staring at them from their dresser?  Pink Friday starts out sweet and fruity then moves on to jasmine and finishes up with soft vanilla and caramelised pear.

Top: star fruit, Italian mandarin and boysenberry

Heart: Lotus, jasmine

Base: caramelized pear, vanilla, musk, woody notes

5. Britney Spears Fantasy Twist

Pop-singer Britney Spears needs no introduction.  She is currently a judge on the X-Factor in the US and is cashing in on her renewed popularity with a new fragrance release.  Fantasy Twist by Britney Spears is two fragrances in one – neither of them new.  The original Fantasy in the pink half and Midnight Fantasy in the blue half.  Fantasy is a rich delicious gourmand perfume and Midnight Fantasy is lighter and fruitier.

6. Lady Gaga FAME

FAME by Lady Gaga was the biggest celebrity perfume release for 2012 and I’m sure there are plenty of little monsters that would be willing to get out of bed on Christmas morning for this one.

7. Nicole by Nicole Richie

Nicole Richie’s Nicole would make a lovely gift because it comes in a beautiful bottle and the perfume is easy to wear with a citrus opening leading to soft patchouli.

Base: cashmere, sandalwood, sugared patchouli, vanilla absolute

8. Elixir by Shakira

Elixir is a gorgeous earthy woody fragrance.  We have well and truly moved on from “fruitchouli” territory here.  I’ll be reviewing this one soon.

Base: amber, musk, styrax, brown sugar, white cedar extract

9. Kate Walsh Billionaire Boyfriend

What single girl wouldn’t appreciate a Billionaire Boyfriend for Christmas?  Billionaire Boyfriend is the follow up to Kate Walsh’s original Boyfriend, which received some great reviews.  Billionaire Boyfriend is richer and heavier than the original.
Top: bergamot, tangerine, green leaves
Heart: black jasmine, velvet orchid, gardenia, patchouli flower
Base: amber

10. Truth or Dare by Madonna

For Mum.   Truth or Dare by Madonna is anything but a typical celebrity perfume and targeted at a more mature audience.

Base: vanilla absolute, caramelized amber, musk
