Sensual greetings APJs
If I wasn’t a small part of this perfume subculture, I feel very sure I never would have heard of, let alone smelled, the incredible creations of today’s perfumer, who is so amazing..
RUBJ Eau de Parfum by VERO KERN 2007
Fragrantica gives these featured notes:
Top: Neroli, passsionfruit, mandarin, bergamot
Heart: Cumin, Basil, African orange flower, tuberose
Base: Virginia cedar, oakmoss, musk
If I wasn’t a small part of this perfume subculture, I feel very sure I never would have heard of, let alone smelled, the incredible creations of Vero Kern. Vero Kern takes time to create her fragrances. Time to develop them. She says that it scares her; launches every six months. Claiming scents are new, but in fact they are just rehashes of old ones. She gets bored of continually seeing many of the same ideas behind new releases.

Vero Kern has a spirituality about her (to me) which becomes more apparent in mature women. I love it. She inspires me. A creative artist. Plus she always looks fabulous! Awesomely cool. I want to be just like her as I get older.
I watched part of an interesting interview with her. Ms Kern say she likes to put “something that is a little bit disturbing” into her fragrances. A note that people cannot identify. Sometimes it may disturb in a positive way and sometimes in a negative way. She goes on to say, “A characteristic perfume has to have this disturbance, otherwise it is flat.” She tries to avoid this certain flatness. “For the eccentric and flamboyant.”
RUBJ is everything but flat.

RUBJ is what I would have wanted on my wedding day.
This is über-sensual. Depending not on the intellect or the spirit. Carnal, fleshly, exquisite, beautiful, unchaste. A fragrance so enrapturing and captivating, I am smitten. Voluptuous. Gorgeous. What more can I say?

Aaah Val,
Rubj is indeed a beauty and I love Vero’s concoctions but more as art than something to wear, you know?
Rubj is at once familiar but at the same time unsettling for me – there must be some deep olfactory memories with this one. I only feel good in it when I’m truly happy. That said, it is magical and I’m glad you love it!

Hi Madeleine! Oh yes. A fragrance like this can only be worn when you can carry it off huh? I adore it because it makes a total perfume statement. And let´s face it, don´t we all enjoy that now and again?? Or am I a stuck up cow?? 😉
Hey Val,
No way, not at all, you’re the polar opposite! And I agree with what you are saying.

Heya,
Can’t wait to get home and open my box of this. It’s waiting patiently for an opening ceremony. Thanks to you Val.

Hi Honey!
Opening ceremony is very important. It would be interesting what people do when they receive a new fragrance wouldn´t it?? I cannot be the only one who has, hmmm, unusual rituals?
Ommmmmmmmmm. xxxxxx
I think it would make an excellent Monday Question on Olfactoria’s Travels. You should ask Birgit if you can commandeer a Monday, I’m sure she’d be thrilled to not have to think of a question.
My opening ceremonies are not always the same but usually I like it to be morning before my first cup of coffee so I can REALLY smell the fragrance. I clean my desk, take off the plastic wrap and open the box, then spritz two big blasts down my top and one in each elbow. Then I sit and breathe deep for about 20 minutes. Then I go outside to clear my nose and come back and do my computer stuff, hopefully overwhelmed by the beauty of my purchase.

Val! The APJs will be my ruin! I just finished bargaining for the big bottle of Interlude Man…now this? Your review and the gorgeous Pinterest photo have sold me on Rubj. Whatever happened to “Just Say No”? It’s been replaced by my new mantra, “Just a Little Sample First”.
Azar my dear, go with the flow. You are clearly already ruined. Enjoy it. Isn´t that Pinterest photo just stunning?? I agree, just a little sample first, unless I just know I absolutely have to have it. Then I buy it anyway. 🙂
Hugs

I love this one very much, although my favorite is Kiki, Vero Kern is a genius!
Hey Victoria! That is the one I am having problems with. I sooooo dislike lavender, BUT I will go and have a little spray right now and see what happens. I have not tried the extrait.
I really like Onda EDP, and likewise, have not tried the extrait. Mito is totally gorgeous. I plan to swan into Roja Dove Parfumerie in Harrods at the end of June and purchase it. 😉 Cheers for dropping by and commenting!

You are so right, Val! I will no longer fight it or deny it! Today the guilty pleasures have become fragrant necessities. My spirit and my disposable income are now liberated and I feel much better. Thank you, CQ.

I rest my case. 🙂
I have Rubj in extrait and it is magical… the edp did not work on me for some reason. Onda I have in both extrait and edp and both are wonderful. Not a lavender fan, but Kiki is nice to sniff occasionally, I keep a sample vial around for that.
Good Evening from Austria, where it is 7 degrees and raining.
I have the Extrait too. Epic smile. Both together are the Bomb!! Cannot wait to try Onda Extrait.
Kiki sample will last me a while I guess. Cheers m`dear!

I really love Rubj now and while I want to try the others in her line my wallet is pleading with me not to. I will sample them eventually. I don’t think I would have worn Rubj on my wedding day. On me the cumin is amplified and it’s a “dirty girl” perfume if there ever was one. It’s a perfume that makes people wonder what I’ve been up to.
Let me clarify it – My wedding night would have been more appropriate!! xxx Hugs CQ
That would work. 😉
Hugs to you too!
Val great review! Rubj is a favorite of mine. lovely.

There are many things to say about Vero’s creations, as indeed I have, too! But do you know that feeling… when you read about something (in my case, I’d been reading about Rubj since it was originally released) and you feel that far-off foreboding… “there’s something there? That was yours truly… especially when a friend who knows me well said “brace yourself! It’s YOU” about it. She was right. 😉 Rubj is simply beautiful, beautifully drrrty, carnal and unapologetic. And yes. It’s Me, too. xo
Oh I know that feeling. I know after hours and hours of intensive, maniacal research, whether
I will want something or not. Rubj was one of those. And I really do love it. 😉 xxx
